How Long Does It Take to Replace a Windshield?

The Short Answer and the Real Answer
When people call us, they usually have one thing in mind: how much of my day is this going to take? It’s a reasonable question. Most of our customers are fitting a windshield replacement in between work, school pickup, and everything else.
The short answer is that the hands-on windshield replacement time for most vehicles is about an hour. The real answer is that your total time depends on a few things, including your vehicle, the glass, the weather, and whether your safety cameras need to be recalibrated. Here’s how it all breaks down.
Windshield Replacement Time in 6 Easy Steps
Here’s what we’re doing during that hour, in order:
- Protect the vehicle: We cover the hood, dash, and seats so nothing gets scratched or dirty
- Remove the trim and wipers: The cowl, moldings, and wiper arms come off to give us access to the glass
- Cut out the old windshield: We carefully cut through the old adhesive and lift the damaged glass out
- Prep the frame: We trim the old urethane down and prime the frame so the new adhesive bonds correctly
- Set the new glass: A fresh bead of urethane goes on, and the new windshield is set in place and pressed into position
- Reinstall and clean up: Trim and wipers go back on, sensors are reconnected, and we vacuum up any glass
None of these steps should be rushed. A windshield that isn’t prepped and seated right can leak, whistle, or fail when you need it most. A shop that promises a much shorter windshield replacement time may be cutting corners on prep.

Don’t Forget Drive-Away Time
Once the glass is in, the adhesive needs time to cure before the car is safe to drive. This is called the minimum drive-away time, and it’s set by the adhesive manufacturer based on the product and the conditions that day. The Auto Glass Safety Council explains why your installer should always tell you this number before they leave.
On a mild day, drive-away time is often an hour or so. In colder or drier weather it can be longer. When you plan your day, count it as part of your total windshield replacement time. We’ll always give you the exact number for your vehicle before we pack up.
What Can Add to Your Windshield Replacement Time
Some jobs take longer than others. Here are the most common reasons:
- ADAS calibration: If your vehicle has a camera behind the windshield, it needs to be recalibrated after the new glass goes in. That can add time depending on the vehicle and the type of calibration required
- Special-order glass: Heated windshields, heads-up display glass, and some newer models may need to be ordered. The install itself is quick, but you may wait a day or more for the part
- Rust or old damage: Rust in the frame has to be treated before new glass can be set, or the bond won’t hold
- Rain sensors and mirror mounts: These need to be transferred or reattached carefully
- Weather: For mobile jobs, heavy rain can mean rescheduling or moving the job under cover
If your vehicle needs calibration, you can read more on our ADAS calibration page.
Typical Windshield Replacement Time by Vehicle
Every vehicle is a little different, but here’s a general idea of what to expect:
- Standard sedans and compact cars: About an hour for the install, plus drive-away time
- Trucks, SUVs, and vans: Similar, though larger glass can take a little longer to set
- Vehicles with ADAS cameras: The install, plus the time needed for calibration
- Specialty or luxury glass: The install is similar, but ordering the glass may add a day or more
We’ll give you a clear windshield replacement time estimate when you call, based on your exact year, make, and model.
Repair Is Even Faster
If your damage is still a small chip, you may not need a replacement at all. Most chip repairs take less than half an hour, and you can drive away right after. Check our repair page to see what kinds of damage we can usually fix.
How Mobile Service Saves You Time
The hour we spend on your windshield is only part of the time you’d spend on a typical shop visit. There’s the drive there, the wait in the lobby, and the drive back. With our mobile service, we come to your home or office, and you go on with your day while we work. That cuts the real windshield replacement time on your end to almost nothing. If you’d rather come to us, in-shop service is available too. Visit our replacement page to see how it works.
Planning Your Day Around a Replacement
A few tips to make it easy:
- Book a morning appointment if you need the car later that day, so the adhesive has time to cure
- Ask whether your glass is in stock when you schedule
- Let us know about any cameras, sensors, or heated glass so we bring the right part
- Plan to keep the windows cracked and skip the car wash for a day or two afterward

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average windshield replacement time?
The installation itself usually takes about an hour. Add drive-away time for the adhesive to cure, plus calibration time if your vehicle has safety cameras.
Can I drive right after my windshield is replaced?
Not right away. Wait until the minimum drive-away time your technician gives you has passed, so the adhesive can hold the glass in place.
Does ADAS calibration add time to the appointment?
Yes. Vehicles with windshield-mounted cameras need recalibration after replacement, which adds time depending on the make, model, and calibration type.
How long does a windshield chip repair take?
Most chip repairs take less than 30 minutes, and you can usually drive right after.
